What is nbn® Fixed Wireless?

Broadband Beamed to Your Home

nbn® Fixed Wireless technology connects your premises to the nbn® network via radio signals. An outdoor antenna is installed on your roof, which communicates with a local nbn® wireless tower. This provides a dedicated connection without relying on phone lines or cables running to your home.

How Fixed Wireless Connection Works

nbn® Fixed Wireless uses 4G and 5G mobile network technology to deliver internet. An nbn® wireless tower in your area transmits a signal to an antenna installed on your property. This antenna is connected by a cable to an nbn® Network Termination Device (W-NTD) or connection box inside your home. You then connect your Wi-Fi router to this W-NTD to access the internet.

Connects via Radio Signals

Data is transmitted wirelessly between an nbn® tower and an antenna on your property.

Outdoor Antenna Required

A small antenna is professionally installed on your roof or another suitable outdoor location.

Line of Sight Dependent

Frequently Asked Questions about nbn® Fixed Wireless

Your Fixed Wireless questions answered.

What is nbn® Fixed Wireless?

nbn® Fixed Wireless is a technology that delivers internet access to homes and businesses by transmitting signals between an nbn® wireless tower and an antenna fixed to the premises.

How is Fixed Wireless different from mobile broadband?

Fixed Wireless uses a fixed antenna on your property pointing to a specific tower, providing a dedicated service to your location. Mobile broadband uses the general mobile network and can be subject to more congestion from mobile phone users.

What speeds can I get with Fixed Wireless?

Speeds vary depending on your plan, signal strength, network congestion, and other factors. Plans typically range from 25Mbps to over 100Mbps download speeds with ongoing network upgrades. Always check typical evening speeds.

Do I need an antenna installed?

Yes, an nbn® outdoor antenna must be installed on your roof or another suitable location on your property by an nbn® approved technician. An nbn® connection box will also be installed indoors.

Can weather affect my Fixed Wireless connection?

Severe weather conditions like very heavy rain or storms can sometimes temporarily affect the signal. However, the network is designed to be resilient.

What if there are trees or obstructions?

A clear line of sight to the nbn® wireless tower is important for the best performance. The nbn® technician will assess this during the installation planning phase.

Fixed Wireless Installation: What to Expect

Connecting to nbn® Fixed Wireless involves a professional installation of equipment at your premises.

An nbn® approved technician will visit your property to conduct a signal survey and determine the best location for the outdoor antenna. They will then install the antenna (usually on the roof) and run a cable to an agreed-upon location inside your home where the nbn® connection box (W-NTD) will be installed. Once the equipment is installed and activated, you can connect your Wi-Fi router.

The installation process typically takes a few hours. Our team will help coordinate the appointment with nbn®.

Service availability and speeds depend on location, line of sight to the nbn® Fixed Wireless tower, signal strength, network congestion, in-home setup, and equipment. Typical evening speeds are an estimate of the speeds you are likely to experience during peak hours (7pm-11pm) and may be slower than off-peak speeds.

Tier speeds are the maximum possible download speeds available during off-peak periods. Fixed Wireless speeds are variable and can be impacted by congestion. Actual speeds can only be determined after your service is activated. Speeds experienced may be slower due to external factors including signal interference, weather conditions, the signal strength or obstruction of the antenna's line of sight to the tower, tower and network capacity, vegetation, geography, built obstructions, radio frequency used and internal factors such as a poor-quality router, wifi interference from electrical goods, the type and source of the content being downloaded, how your device is connecting to the internet (when using WiFi, you may experience slower speeds than what can be achieved by connecting your device(s) with a network cable), or old house wiring. We can work with you to help you find what may be causing these problems and suggest ways to fix them like where to place your modem/router to get the best performance.
